In Primary school the students have learnt how to keep well and take care of physical health. Students are new to Southfield. They are now ready to learn about what they are good at and what makes them happy.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn what they are good at and what makes them happy. They will learn how to recognise their strengths and talents and how these can be used to help them achieve their goals. This will enable them to be ready to learn about how to work with others and how their strengths can support other people.

This learning will enable the students to be ready to learn about anti-bullying and the impact that bullying has on the bully and the victim.

They will learn about how to recognise when someone is behaving in a manner that is hurtful both in the real world and online. They will learn about prejudice and racism and how this can impact negatively on people’s feelings . This learning will enable students to be ready to learn about mental health - what it is and how to support their own and others mental health.

They have learnt about how to recognise when someone is behaving in a manner that is hurtful both in the real world and online including prejudice and racism and how this can impact negatively on people’s feelings . The students are now ready to learn about what mental health is and what they can do to support their own and others mental wellbeing.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn what mental health is and how everyone can have times when they do not feel happy and need support. They will learn how to get help when they feel upset/worried/anxious and what they can do in their day to day life that makes them feel better. Students will know that mental health needs to be worked on just as physical health and doing things regularly will support positive mental health and feeling. This learning will enable the students to be ready to learn about healthy eating and the links between what we eat and how it makes us feel.

Students have learnt what mental health is and how to get help when they feel upset/worried/anxious. They now know what they can do in their day to day life that makes them feel better and that mental health needs to be worked on just as physical health and doing things regularly will support positive mental health and feeling. This has enabled the students to be ready to learn about healthy eating and the links between what we eat and how it makes us feel.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn what healthy foods are and the importance of a balanced diet including having at least 5 portions of fruit/vegetables a day. They will learn that not all foods are good for us and that some people can have reactions and allergies to some foods and how some cultures do not eat certain foods. They will learn how to make healthy choices with food and know that what they eat can impact how they feel. They will also learn about the effect of peer pressure and how friends can influence their positive choices. This will prepare the students to learn about how to take care of their physical health including the routines needed for a healthy lifestyle.

They know about the importance of sleep and how overuse of electronic devices can impact on sleep and physical health. The students know about personal hygiene and how to protect themselves when out in the environment including when out in the sun. They are now ready to learn about what to do when their physical health is not good and how to get the help and support they need.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn about how to recognise when they are not feeling well or in pain. They will learn how to communicate these feelings effectively in order to get the help they need. They will also learn about the benefits and risks of medication. This will enable the students to have the communication skills to express their feelings and be able to identify and articulate emotions in order to get along with others in a positive way.

They also know how to minimise the impact of external factors on their own wellbeing including peer pressure. This knowledge and skills around self esteem has enabled the students to be ready to learn about self awareness and emotional stability.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn about looking after themselves. They learn who and how to ask for help when they are feeling worried about anything. They will learn about their rights and what actions are classed as abusive and that these have a legal implication.They will learn the skills needed to communicate their feelings and emotions effectively to get the help and support they need. This understanding of themselves will lead them on to be ready to learn about how to keep themselves physically well by following effective health and hygiene routines.

Students have learnt what accidental and risk mean and how taking risks in a safe and positive way can be something that is beneficial for them. They have learnt about the consequences of taking risks and who to go to for support if they feel the risks outweigh the benefits. This knowledge will now enable the students to be ready to learn about medicinal drugs and their risks and benefits and how to keep themselves safe and well around medicine.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will learn what medicine is and the difference between over the counter medication and prescribed medication. Students will learn what a healthy lifestyle is and how to achieve this. They will learn about the importance of sleep, and how sleep plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy life. They will learn about how outside influences can affect our decisions and how to minimise the risks of these pressures, including pressures online, to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This knowledge and understanding will enable the students to be ready to learn about managing pressure and how to deal effectively with peer pressure and behaviour they feel is unacceptable.
