What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

In Key Stage 3 students have looked at Environmental Awareness in Living in the Wider World. They have looked at the choices people can make towards a healthier environment and are now ready to learn more specifically about their home and how to manage this to keep themselves and their home clean.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

This term students will learn about household tasks to keep a house clean and tidy. They will gain an understanding of what needs cleaning at home and which products and equipment is needed. They will learn how and where to use these. Students will learn how to sort clothes before washing and to follow washing instructions as on the garment label. They will identify symbols on the label. After learning how to use a washing machine to clean their clothes, they will store clothes appropriately. Home Management is in preparation for Daily Living in the Spring term which focusses on tasks beyond cleaning which are needed to run a home.

Practical Skills:

  • Cleaning
  • Using a washing machine
  • Using a dryer
  • Hanging items of clothing
  • Folding items of clothing

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Last term, students learnt about Home Management in terms of keeping the home clean and tidy. This included washing and storing clothes. Students are now ready to look at other tasks which are needed to run a home.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students recognise what weekly tasks are needed to be done in the home. They start to learn how to set a routine to ensure they have healthy habits and a healthy lifestyle while doing household tasks. They look in detail at some of the tasks, which include recycling, using a post office and preparing for a trip. This work should be done in context wherever possible. Next term, students will look at Community Living - what other local amenities are available on the high street, including which shops to go to for specific items.

Practical Skills:

  • Recycling
  • Posting a letter or a parcel
  • Using a post office counter
  • Packing a bag or suitcase

Summer

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

During the Spring term, students recognised tasks they may need at the post office. Students are now ready to learn more about what amenities are available for them in Bradford. Students will also have the opportunity to look at other amenities in the locality for leisure purposes to build on last term’s learning about balancing household tasks with lifestyle choices and opportunities.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Year 10 students have focussed on the different aspects of running a home from keeping it clean and tidy, to shopping for items and storing these appropriately. They recognise the need to balance household tasks with a healthy lifestyle. In year 11 students will look in more detail at the home and being in the wider community with a focus on safety. This will build on their knowledge of what needs to be done in the home and lifestyle choices with how to make safe choices.

Practical Skills:

  • Shopping
  • Handling money
  • Photography
  • Seeking support in the community

Year 11

Autumn

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

In Year 10 students looked at the different aspects of running a home. Now students are ready to look in more detail at the home with a focus on safety. This will build on their knowledge of what needs to be done in the home to be able to make safe choices.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

This term students will look at home safety. They will consider different elements of fire, water, electricity and gas and gain knowledge of the risks associated with these. They will look at real life scenarios to identify hazards and work out what safe choices can be made to reduce the risk or remove the hazard. This work will be extended next term when students look at road safety and other risks that they may encounter when out in the community.

Practical Skills:

  • Using water safely
  • Using heat safely
  • Basic First Aid

Spring

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Last term students looked at home safety and the hazards that may occur. They explored risks associated with fire, water, electricity and gas and gained knowledge of how to minimise hazards and potential risk. The work will be extended this term as students look at road safety and the risks that they may encounter when out in the community.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will spend time outside the classroom to gain knowledge of personal safety when out in the community. They will identify potential hazards when out walking and seek ways to minimise any risk. Students will focus on road safety and use different pedestrian crossings to cross a range of roads. Students will gain knowledge of the locality around school and recognise who it is appropriate to speak to and what to say, including in an emergency. This work will prepare students for the next term learning about travelling safely.

  • Crossing a road
  • Avoiding hazards

Summer

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Last term students gained knowledge of personal safety when out in the community. They identified potential hazards when out walking and sought ways to minimise any risk. Road safety learning allowed students to gain knowledge of the locality. That work prepared students for this learning on travelling safely when using public transport.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students experience a range of public transport including seeing planes taking off and landing at the local airport. Students identify what transport is the most suitable for their journeys. The class will plan a local trip which includes using a bus and a train to get to the destination. They will build into their plan what they will do if they encounter a problem. This work will prepare students for Community Living work at Southfield Sixth Form or for those students who will leave school to go to college this work will support their independent travel.

Practical Skills:

  • Using a bus
  • Using a train
  • Planning a journey
