Religious Education (RE)
At Co-op Academy Southfield, we want our students to understand, respect and value different religions and world views, including key teachings and beliefs. They will be encouraged to explore what this feels and looks like, through our ambitious RE curriculum. They will learn how religion impacts on daily life as well as how religion influences individuals and communities.
“RE ‘should explore the important role that religious and non-religious worldviews play in all human
life…It is a subject for all pupils, whatever their own family background and personal beliefs and practices.’’
Believing & Belonging: The local agreed syllabus for RE, 2021.
The teaching of RE helps students to promote respect and open- mindedness towards others with different faiths and beliefs and encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging. It allows us to promote the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils at school and in wider society. We want all students to grow up healthy, happy, safe, and able to be active citizens in modern Britain.
RE supports community cohesion and SMSC education, including fundamental British aspirations and Values. We take every opportunity to widen the opportunities for all pupils. This is done by:
• Celebrating a variety of local, national and international festivals e.g. Festivals of light
• Understanding how different people celebrate both religious and non-religious festivals
• Charity work including children in need, sports relief
• National and international awareness days/ weeks
Assessment
In Religious Education staff are expected to complete one "Evidence for Learning" (EFL) log per term or maintain a marked workbook/annotated portfolio of work. The EFL log should document the student's progress against the skills progression steps, reflecting their understanding and engagement with the subject matter. Alternatively, the workbook or portfolio will be regularly marked and annotated by teachers and learning support assistants, providing feedback on misconceptions, positive reinforcement, and guidance for next steps.
RE Long Term Plan
Students will focus on three main aims which are suggested by ‘the local agreed syllabus for RE’. In Autumn term, students will investigate the beliefs and practices of religions and other world views. In spring term, students will investigate how religions and other world views address questions of meaning, purpose and value. In summer term, students will investigate how religions and other world views influence morality, identity and diversity.
