People & Communities

At Co-op Academy Southfield we understand the importance of enabling our students to feel connected to the wider world.  Students are taught historical and geographical knowledge about Bradford, United Kingdom and beyond to understand how issues are relevant to them on a local, national and global level. The curriculum is designed to develop student’s understanding of their connection to the world and what is on offer as they prepare for adulthood. They have opportunities to follow the Co-op Young Leaders Programme and recognise their leadership skills to plan events which make a difference to the school and the local community. The focus gradually moves to students gaining a wider knowledge of the opportunities and challenges that exist beyond Co-op Academy Southfield as students consider in Key stage 5 where they want to be and what they want to do when they leave school.

Assessment

In People and Communities, staff are expected to complete one "Evidence for Learning" (EFL) log per term or maintain a marked workbook/annotated portfolio of work. The EFL log should illustrate the student's progress against the skills progression steps, highlighting their understanding and engagement with community-related topics. Alternatively, the workbook or portfolio will be regularly marked and annotated by teachers and learning support assistants, providing constructive feedback on the student’s exploration of different cultures, community roles, and social structures, addressing any misconceptions, and outlining next steps.
