  2. Students will know that plants need water, light and nutrients from soil to grow, they will know how to care for plants.
  3. Students will know that there are different animal groups: reptiles, birds, amphibians, fish and mammals including humans.

Autumn

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

In KS3 students will revisit prior learning from KS2. Their knowledge of the key NC topics will be baselined in years 7 to consolidate, retain and learn new science knowledge whilst reinforcing key scientific vocabulary.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will look at nature and wildlife in the locality to see how this changes with the seasons. They will
identify the changes they see, feel and activities to do as the seasons change. Students gain knowledge
that different fruit and vegetables are ready to eat at different times of the year (in different seasons). This
knowledge will prepare students to learn more about the conditions different plants need to survive and grow.

Spring

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?

Students know that the seasons change and how this affects the weather and nature around them. They are ready to learn about other requirements that plants need to grow.

How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?

Students will grow, care and observe different plants, recording the changes that take place. They will recognise that plants need water, light, the correct temperature and nutrients from soil to grow. Students will grow herbs and vegetables to cook and eat. They will explore the life cycle of plants in preparation for learning about
different types of animals including humans, their life cycles and how animals are similar and different.
